As a small child, my grandfather --who had a big bold beautiful baritone voice--and never sang in public--use to sing a very old song.

It was a song he deeply and genuinely loved. When I was just a young boy I had no idea why he loved it so much.

I also didn't know a lot of things that had touched his life.

He served in World War II but would never all about it. He served his local community and had run ins with some legendary bad guys. He wouldn't much discuss with me. He was a legendary and hugely successful salesman in his later life.

He had deeply, intense personal heartbreak touch his marriage. He had health that got bad with diabetes. He had a temper because of the hurt in life, but rarely if ever did I hear him complain about ways others actions affected him.

But he loved his family...
He lived his friends...
He was the hardest working and one of the most common-sense-smartest men I ever met...

And he loved his God!

So many times I was at the foot of his bed and ask him to tell me stories of his past.

So many times he shielded me from the worst parts of them.

So many times when I would ask him to sing me that song - he never refused.

He loved Memorial Day and always said prayers for the families of his military friends who we had lost.

So on this holiday weekend where we do remember I wanted to share that song with you as well.

Ones last side note... Every night when James asks me to sing to him before bed time this is the song he now asks for every night... Grandpa Shetter would be so thankful!

"The Cross" (as James asks for it...)

On a hill far away stood an rugged cross,
THE emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

Refrain:
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

You hear me when I call You are my morning song Though darkness fills the night…

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light

Whom shall I fear

You crush the enemy
Underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still

Whom shall I fear

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory

Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I'm holding on to Your promises

You are faithful
You are faithful

And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the hold world in your hands
I'm hold on to your promises

You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful

I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side...
